Lutter (FDS) Mute's English Patch (Version 1.0) http://mute.vblank.net/ There's nothing you need to know to play Lutter: no story, no context, no complicated gameplay instructions. In fact one of the joys of the game is discovering how to progress on your own. On the other hand, there are a few things you may WANT to know, especially if you've tried the game and gotten stuck. So what follows could be considered an abbreviated tip sheet -- not required reading by any means, but here if you need it. * * * Pressing up on the D-pad lets you talk to people and go through doors. The B button brings up the status screen and the A button brings up the item window. If you press A at the beginning of the game, it won't do anything because you don't start out with any items. Before long, though, you'll have a respectable inventory and you'll need to be able to access it. If you can't figure out how to use the items you find, save the game and experiment. The one item I still couldn't figure out, after trying to use it on everything in sight, was the potion-looking thing. It turns out that some blocks in the game are hollow -- when you try to walk on them, you pass through -- and the potion is a coagulant that lets you solidify them. While navigating the labyrinth, you'll be attacked by the occasional enemy. Fighting back is encouraged. Just use the D-pad to walk into your opponent and Lutter will take care of the rest. Hit points can be regained after the battle -- or any other time -- by standing still. The surrender option on the status menu is used when you've fallen into a hole or otherwise trapped yourself. It won't give you back items or keys you may have misused -- it simply restores your hit points and teleports you back to wherever you entered the current screen. At times you'll find yourself battling a gigantic boss. In these situations, your inventory is off limits except for the healing items, which you can use by pressing A. Unlike enemies in the labyrinth proper, who you can bribe into restoring your hit points, the bosses have no mercy and it's game over if they defeat you. So unless you've just saved, don't hold back with those healing items. * * * Acquiring the disk image and applying the patch are outside the scope et cetera. The main thing is getting it to run. As of this writing, not all FDS emulators let you move Lutter around. If you insert side B when prompted, press a button to begin the game, and watch as he fails to respond to your controls, try another emulator. I had the best luck with Famtasia and nnnnnnnesterj, but go with what works. This patch was cobbled together pretty much the same way as the last. Thanks as usual to Necrosaro, Neill Corlett, and SnowBro for the utilities; thanks to Dastard for the info; and thanks to you for playing. -- Mute (January 29, '03)
